Kia ora koutou,
I am taking 2 days bereavement leave from tomorrow so Mrs Kate Johnson will be in Room 4 (both days).
Reports are completed for most students and will come home on Monday. I will be back on Wednesday!
Thanks for you constructive feedback on our End of Year Celebration last week- I know Sandy has heard your feedback so that is wonderful.
Room 4 are expecting a bit of a pop-corn and an xmas movie one afternoon this week so I hope to have this organised for Thursday.

Week 8
5th of December 2012
Kia ora Koutou,
we are rapidly approaching the end of the school year and many events are taking place or will soon be taking place.
Room 4 has been singing the birthday song to a lot of new 6 year olds these last two to three months and all of these children have had their 6 Year Net (a standardised literary test for all NZ 6 year olds), so if you can make time with me to take a look- if you haven't already- please do!
We have been attending regular singing and performance practises these last two weeks and today we will have a full run-through with the children from 9.10.
Our celebration takes place from 4pm this Thursday and students will be required to return to school in uniform and roll will be taken in their classroom while families make their way to the hall to grab the best seats!
Our senior students are also performing on that night, from 7pm and today (I think!) our students have been invited to the dress rehearsal for Twelfth Night after lunch.
We are continuing to have fairly normal lessons for reading , writing and math although things are being interrupted at various times so this week will be our last week of formal guided reading lessons, and the home learning this week will be spelling (Essential Spelling Lists) and the highlighted words are the ones your child can already spell. Take time through the week, when you can find it, to do just a few words with your child. Thank you!
Report writing is almost complete, and second drafts go to Sandy Hastings today.
Class lists for next year continue to be finalised and I believe students will know there class for next year by week 9.
On a personal note, my dear 94 year old nana, Georgina suffered a significant stroke on Friday and my family are gathering at this time to reflect on her long life, so a sad and reflective time for me and my family which may mean I am away from school at sometime, but I will let you all know in advance if I can.

Week 5
Kia ora koutou-We have a busy week ahead so...
A few reminders or 'heads-up' for you:Tuesday: students are welcome to wear a fancy hat or 'facinator' for cup day!
Wednesday: Timmi Lewis in for the day (I have a CRT day)
Thursday: "Loud Shirt" mufti day (fundraiser, bring a gold coin)
Reading Progress:
As children turn six they will complete a 6 Year Net ( a literacy test) which Mrs Rowena Barker will do. I will share results of this test with each family as they are completed. Most of the children in room 4 are reading at a level appropriate for their age and the length of time they have been at school.
After two years at school children are expected to be reading at level 17 so we have a number of children who are well on their way to this (or, have passed it!) and we should be very proud of their success.
The focus for students at these higher levels moves towards true integration of strategies (meaning, structure and visual sources of information) with an increased emphasis on comprehension, phrasing and fluency (expressive reading) and reading widely on a range of topics, such as maths and science and reading for a range of purposes.
Students who are fluent readers should also be increasing the amount of time spent on independent reading. It is not essential therefore for the numbered levels to continue to increase at the same speed they have done. It is far more important that our children are given opportunities to meaningfully engage with a text, to consolidate their reading strategies and enjoy reading widely non-fiction and fiction. Room 4 are welcoming Mel tomorrow (Boyd and Winni's mum) to do a fun science activity.
Students can share news tomorrow- but this will have to happen after morning tea because our science experiments may take up the morning!
Students have been working hard to earn 'jelly beans' (not real ones) to add to our reward jar- when the class earn 100 they can have a short movie and a treat (pop-corn or an ice block). The students are working hard to keep on task, to be kind and helpful, tolerant and friendly and today they managed to get 55 beans.
I hope we can enjoy a movie very soon.

30th October
Kia ora koutou,
We are well into the term and our new topic "Kitchen Chemistry", and we have already conducted some fun experiments and look forward to more! I am thinking we might make
A reminder to send Poetry books back to school this week- we are still using them to add new poems too.
Athletics again tomorrow afternoon- there is no need for children to wear mufti for this- school uniform
clothing which is easy to run in and appropriate footwear is all they need.
Sunhats are required now also, and it is possible for students to get sunblock from me during the day as they need.
Do check out the beckenham school library blog if you want to look at some simple e-books or do some science searches it is all there for you!
